(Kyiv) Several loud explosions were heard in central and eastern Kyiv on Monday evening after an air raid alert was sounded, AFP journalists reported.
The explosions sounded shortly after 11 p.m. (4 p.m. Eastern Time) and a light trail that appeared to be from an air defense missile strike was visible in the sky.
“Anti-aircraft defenses are working in Kyiv. Stay in shelters,” the Ukrainian capital’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. An AFP journalist heard five loud explosions in the city’s eastern district of Pozniaky.
Kyiv has been targeted by several air raids in recent weeks, including a Russian missile attack in July that hit a children’s hospital.
On Wednesday, Russia fired 89 drones at Ukraine, more than 40 of which were shot down over the capital and its environs.
