This other Canadian contribution comes as the leaders of the seven most industrialized countries, meeting in Germany, pledged to eliminate or ban the import of coal and oil from Russia in response to that country’s aggression in Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis triggered by the invasion.
Canadian support of $150 million consists of $75 million in humanitarian aid to help operations in Ukraine and neighboring countries. There will be distribution of emergency food and vouchers, as well as the establishment of protection measures, shelters and health services.
Canada will also provide $52 million in agricultural aid, including mobile equipment to increase grain storage capacity, as well as assistance to provide diagnostic testing and rapid animal disease surveillance to enable export certification .
Canada is also contributing $15 million to help fund demining efforts and $9.7 million to address human rights abuses in Ukraine.
The announcement was made at the end of the summit of the G7 countries in which Prime Minister Trudeau took part.
