The war between Israel and Hamas is leading to an increase in anti-Semitic acts. More than 800 were identified in three weeks. But what does anti-Semitism look like in France? Response elements.

These are posters with photos of Israeli hostages. Jewish students have been posting them on Parisian walls for three weeks. Most are torn, or sprayed with anti-Semitic inscriptions. “We started here, and when we came back, the posters were already all on the ground”, details Yossef Marciano, national secretary of the Union of Jewish Students of France. According to the UEJF, the Jewish community has been changing its habits since October 7.

Increased surveillance

“It’s an explosion of what we call everyday anti-Semitism (…) there are no physical attacks at the moment”, specifies Samuel Lejoyeux, president of the UEJF. Many graffiti against Jews exist. In Lyon (Rhône), a school was targeted by tags. The Jewish community is worried in France. “We feel that there is a certain tension”, specifies a practitioner. Throughout France, special surveillance has been put in place.
