Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday (September 7th) that kyiv forces had recaptured several localities in the Kharkiv region, in northeastern Ukraine, from Russian troops, without however giving any details on the localities in question. “This week we have good news from the Kharkiv region”, said the Ukrainian president in his evening video speech broadcast on social networks. Refusing to name them, he referred to “localities where the Ukrainian flag returned”.

Observers have reported in recent days of a supposed breakthrough of Ukrainian forces in the Kharkiv region, without this information being verifiable from an independent source. Ukraine has been leading a counter-offensive in the south of its territory since last week, for which it also claims success, while Moscow claims to inflict heavy losses on its adversary.

The Kharkiv region has been partly occupied by the Russian army since the start of the invasion on February 24. The city of the same name, the second largest in Ukraine, is regularly targeted by deadly bombardments, but the forces of Moscow have never managed to seize it.
