The canteens of the nurseries in Villejuif, in Val-de-Marne, are provided by a market gardener. The latter’s farm was bought by the municipality.
In Villejuif (Val-de-Marne), a market gardener delivers her harvest to the town’s nurseries. These are organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables, produced 150 km away. A farmhouse, located in Tannerre-en-Puisaye (Yonne), is the property of Villejuif. The former operations manager is now an employee of the municipality. “We put this farm up for sale. At the same time, Villejuif was looking for a site to send the children outdoors. For my part, it allowed me to keep my job as a market gardener”explains Isabelle Gauffeny, market gardener at the Frémis farm.
20% organic mandatory in canteens
In the kitchens, meals for the 50 children in a nursery are prepared daily. In addition to cooking fresh produce, the chef also educates children’s palates. The experience allows Villejuif to reach 20% organic in its canteens, an obligation since 2022 with the Egalim law. According to Pierre Garzon, mayor (PCF) of Villejuif, this solution is more financially accessible for the municipality.
