VIDEO. Writer Julia Kerninon talks about the couple’s arrival of a child

“Of course having a child with someone you love brings you closer. But it also explodes”, affirms Julia Kerninon, who has just co-wrote the book “Mothers without filter”, which deals with postpartum, extreme fatigue, mental load… For her, there is something rather rock’n’roll in continuing to live her love life with a baby on the side. Mother of two children, the writer evokes this arrival as an upheaval in life, an event that “change everything”.

“Reinventing a love story around the baby”

From a couple who never argued, Julia Kerninon explains that the conflicts lasted a year, with her partner, from the moment she gave birth. Before giving birth, she images her daily life with a metaphor: “The rope that bound me to my partner was very long”. The outings of his spouse and his temporary absence do not impact him then. But after childbirth, it’s something else entirely. According to her, the exit of one of the parents then obliges the other to stay “blocked” at home. “There is almost a side ‘the first to leave the apartment wins‘”. Over time, these difficult situations make him realize that his couple, through these different stages, is linked in a richer way than before.

Julie Kerninon also discusses the impact of pregnancy and childbirth on the mother’s body. “It’s a body that needs to repair itself so it plays on the intimate life of the parents”, she specifies. She highlights the patriarchal society, which still affects women today. “It is mainly they who take care of small children, manage family life and domestic life.”. The notion of time also changes for a couple of young parents. Some time after giving birth, Julia Kerninon shares her desire for her partner to “compensate for” this time given to find each other.
