On the occasion of the release of his first album “Caviar!”, Brut met Martinican rapper Meryl to talk about inspirations, the Creole language and the reality of artists from the Antilles.
In Martinique, 85% of the population speaks Creole. It is also in this language that the Martinican rapper Meryl raps. For her, this was obvious, considering that Creole “an integral part of (West Indies) history”. According to the artist, Creole, which mixes “several South American, Spanish, etc. origins”born “will never die and will continue to evolve”. Artists also play a role of“ambassadors” and are “actors” in this sense.
If Meryl was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique, she confides that it remains difficult to break into this field, and even more so when you come from the Antilles. “These are small territories. We are big, but at the same time we are small.” In her first album “Caviar!”, Meryl pays tribute to West Indian artists like Princess Lover whom she invited on stage at the We Love Green festival or Jocelyne Béroard from Kassav. “Having a monument like Jocelyne Béroard, in my album, really, is the beginning and the end”rejoices the rapper.
