To help people in a state of amazement in the face of a traumatic event, the great reporter Nicolas Delesalle was trained in the 6C protocol. A method that he used in Ukraine, and which can be used in many everyday situations.

Before leaving for Ukraine, Nicolas Delesalle was trained in the 6C protocol, a method that allows a person to be taken out of a state of amazement when faced with a traumatic event. “It is a so-called cognitive and functional activation protocol, which means that it allows someone who is in a state of emotional distress, who is flabbergasted, to switch back to normal and effective functioning in a few minutes“, explains Emmanuelle Halioua, official representative of Protocol 6C in France.

The great reporter for Paris Match Nicolas Delesalle was able to apply the protocol as soon as he arrived in Ukraine. “There are 500 kilo bombs that have fallen on a block of houses (…) we pass a man in the snow, the guy is clearly in a state of shock, when he speaks to us, there are sirens who get back on the road and he says to us: “Ah, the last time I heard those sirens my wife was alive.”” At this time, the reporter remembers a man who was unable to move and speak. To get him out of this state, he used the 6C protocol, which consisted of asking him open-ended questions. This made it possible to mobilize his prefrontal cortex – which is the area of the brain that rationalizes things – , en spite of the amygdala, the seat of the emotions.

As Emmanuelle Halioua reminds us, the 6C protocol is aimed at various situations in which you experience emotional distress: rape, assault, road accident, natural disaster, attack, intra-family violence, harassment, etc.
