These are the first images of a forgotten famine in southern Madagascar. A team of “Special Envoy” was able to reach the remote region of the Big Island, where global warming is starving the population.
The south of Madagascar is hit by the worst drought the country has seen in more than forty years. The rivers are dry, the fields have turned into vast barren expanses. A southerly wind covers everything with red sand. Nothing grows any more, whereas here, 90% of the inhabitants live from agriculture or breeding.
For the United Nations, this would be the first climate famine in history, directly linked to global warming – even though people here don’t have cars or factories … official statistics, but hundreds of people have already died of hunger. To feed themselves, children only have beef skin or boiled cactus leaves

Residents flee the drought-ravaged countryside and crowd into towns, where 80% of children suffer from undernutrition. Hospitals are overwhelmed. One of our teams has managed to reach this remote region of the Big Island, where global warming is starving the population.
