Disabling hearing loss affects 5% of the world’s population. These deaf creators tell their daily life on TikTok to raise awareness among hearing people.

Deaf creators tell on TikTok their daily life in a world of hearing people. “A guy approached us. He said to us, “You’re making a gang sign. Where are you from? Where are you from? What gang? What gang?” So I said, “Not at all, we’re deaf and we speak in sign language“”, says a tiktoker.

The term “deaf” covers a wide variety of hearing deficits. More than 5% of the world’s population, or more than 360 million people, suffer from a disabling hearing loss. For people who are hard of hearing, such mundane tasks as waking up or using a tap are greatly complicated by the loss of hearing. “I’ve tried the worst alarm bells: fire alarms, police sirens, military trumpets.”

Many people with hearing loss wear hearing aids that amplify sound. Also, people who suffer from a more severe hearing loss can have cochlear implants, which transform sounds into electrical signals.

TikTok has given deaf creators a platform to show everyone how to be more inclusive of the hearing impaired.
