Invited to the podium of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday evening, the head of state notably confirmed France’s support for Ukraine, so that the country “stands firm” against Russia.
Invited to speak at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, French President Emmanuel Macron devoted a large part of his speech to the war in the Middle East and the 31-month-old war in Ukraine. Between diplomacy and military support, from Africa to the Indo-Pacific region, he recalled France’s positions on the international scene.
Regarding the war of invasion waged by Russia in Ukraine since February 2022, Emmanuel Macron assured Paris’ unconditional support to kyiv, so that this country attacked “hold on”. “Russia is waging a war of territorial conquest in Ukraine (…) and is guilty of serious breaches of the law”he accused. “Who will still be able to believe themselves protected from their stronger neighbours (…) if we leave Russia alone?” win the war in Ukraine, he also demanded.
“There must not, there cannot be war in Lebanon,” he also said, as the Israeli army said it had targeted more than 2,000 Lebanese Hezbollah targets since Monday, leaving more than 550 dead and tens of thousands internally displaced fleeing the bombings. “We strongly call on Israel to stop the escalation in Lebanon and on Hezbollah to stop the shooting”he said.
Regarding the war in the Gaza Strip, Emmanuel Macron condemned the extremely heavy human toll, established at 41,495 dead on Wednesday by the Hamas Health Ministry. “This war must end and a ceasefire must be declared as soon as possible.”he hammered home, denouncing a “scandal for humanity”.
