“Victory Songs (Vol. 1)”, The Franklin Electric

He did everything on his own, Jon Matte. At home, at his friend Connor Seidel’s. By choice? By desire to continue against all odds, the industry no longer being what it used to be for independents. Do we lose? Of course not. The musical chairs of the Franklin Electric collective, very revolving in 2013, have only been seating Jon for a while now. Survival mode, risky process, he has taken on everything and this first volume of Victory Songs is aptly named. Between desperate escape and roadside rest stops, the song Choices cross Baja and come what may. You leave it all behind / Got the feeling there is something you can’t find “, sings Matte in her dull tone, against a backdrop of a melody that is both dull and beautiful. Fears assail her at times, Afraid describes it well, but the journey continues, the music rolls and life happens. The destination is not yet on the horizon (“ Seems like I’ll never be done “, he notes without sadness), but Victory Song is not a triumphant song: the only celebration is ours. Yes, we find ourselves hearing and seeing everything from the passenger seat.
