(Nyon) Coach José Mourinho was banned for four European competition games by UEFA on Wednesday for verbally attacking the referee in the stadium garage after AS Roma lost to Sevilla in the Europa League final.
Footage circulated after the May 31 final. The AS Roma coach could be seen approaching England referee Anthony Taylor in the Budapest stadium garage and insulting him.
AS Roma lost in a penalty shootout against Sevilla. It was the Italian club’s last chance to qualify for the Champions League.
Mourinho will therefore serve his suspension during the Europa League group stage in September.
The length of the suspension is double the minimum of two matches under UEFA’s disciplinary rules.
A day after the final, Taylor and his family were harassed by AS Roma supporters at Budapest airport.
UEFA has also imposed a €50,000 fine on AS Roma and will block the sale of tickets to its supporters for their next away game in the Europa League.
AS Roma must also contact the Hungarian soccer federation to compensate for the damage caused by their supporters to the Puskas Arena.
