Venezuela | More than 200 police officers convicted of human rights violations

(Caracas) More than 200 Venezuelan law enforcement officers have been sentenced to prison terms of up to 28 years for human rights violations, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said on Wednesday.

Sentences were pronounced against “210 police and military, agents of the State, who unfortunately committed human rights violations”, declared Mr. Saab.

He said further convictions of officials implicated in human rights violations would soon be announced.

In November 2021, “820 state security officials were indicted for alleged human rights violations and 40 people were indicted as immediate collaborators of these criminals,” he added.

Most of those convicted are linked to human rights violations committed during protests against the government of President Nicolas Maduro between April and July 2017, which left at least 125 people dead.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has opened an investigation against Venezuela for possible crimes against humanity during the protests, according to a memorandum signed in November in Caracas by ICC prosecutor Karim Khan and President Maduro.
