On the occasion of COP26, the editorial staff of the 20 Heures is exploring ways to limit global warming in its series “A solution for the planet”. Wednesday November 3, focus on urban forests, which absorb CO2 in the heart of cities.

What if nature returned to the heart of cities? In the middle of the asphalt, close to expressways, small ecosystems are emerging, planted by the hand of man, to put the city in green. They are called urban forests. In Paris, the Place de Catalogne, with 2,000 square meters of concrete and barely a few trees, is set to change. By 2024, an urban forest will emerge, and it is already making the inhabitants dream. But some are more circumspect, considering in particular that it would be more useful to make a forest elsewhere, where one can walk.

Unlike parks, urban forests are not meant to be fully open to the public. For cities, they are first and foremost an essential tool in the fight against global warming, by allowing urban areas to be cooled, some of which constitute real heat islands. “We will have a planting density which means that we will have 60% of the shade that will be projected on the ground, where on average, we only have 20%”, explains Christophe Nadjovski, deputy Europe Ecology-Les Verts at the town hall of Paris, in charge of the greening of spaces.
