Up to 40 cm in places: we could have the biggest snowfall of the year this week

A major storm accompanied by precipitation should affect the entire province on Thursday evening, but until then Quebecers will be able to enjoy a cold but sunny day.

The low pressure system from Colorado is moving towards Quebec while intensifying. Snow is expected as of Thursday evening for southern Quebec.

Environment Canada has also issued special weather reports for many areas of the province, such as the greater Montreal region, Quebec City, the Laurentians, Lanaudière and Mauricie.

“Significant amounts of snow and blowing snow are expected through Friday when a transition to rain is expected. During this change in rain, an episode of ice is possible”, wrote the federal agency in particular.

The precipitation should then change back to flurries before finally ending gradually during the day on Saturday.

Although it is still early to predict the exact trajectory and accumulation of snow, certain regions north of the river can expect to receive between 20 and 25 centimeters of snow, while southern Estrie and Montérégie will be entitled to rain instead.

Environment Canada stresses that road conditions could become dangerous due to visibility that could quickly go from “good” to “zero” Thursday and Friday and possible ice.

While waiting for the next storm, Quebecers can enjoy sunny weather.

In Montreal and Quebec, the sun will be out and the mercury will show -8 degrees (with a wind chill of -15 degrees in the afternoon) and -11 degrees (with a wind chill of -14 degrees), respectively.
