Up to 10 cm in places | Snow squalls expected in the province

The snow falling in several regions of Quebec on Sunday could turn into squalls in places, causing zero visibilities and accumulations of up to 10 cm, warns Environment Canada.

The cold front that will sweep across the province could cause snow squalls in the Laurentians, Haute-Mauricie, Montérégie, Estrie and Beauce, says Dominic Martel, meteorologist at Environment Canada. “We then speak of heavy snow showers that form, but it never lasts very long,” he explains. However, it is necessary to be extra careful during their passage, since the visibilities are then almost nil, due to the blowing snow.

“There will be no storm with large quantities generalized over the province, specifies however Dominic Martel. It will be more local. Greater Montreal and the Quebec region should be spared snow squalls. 2 to 5 cm of snow is forecast for these areas.

If the temperature will be mild in the early afternoon in Montreal, around -1°C, the cold front will cause the mercury to drop drastically in the evening. Temperatures of -18°C are expected in the metropolitan area and around -21°C for Quebec.

Monday will be “a great day to start spring break,” without snowfall, said Dominic Martel. However, you will have to dress warmly, since the mercury could drop to -10°C in several regions of Quebec.

A system from Western Canada could, however, bring up to 10 cm to the south of the province on Tuesday, warns the meteorologist.
