A historic heat wave has been sweeping part of the country for a fortnight now. The heat wave will further extend during the weekend of July 22, with temperatures above 41 degrees.
With 21 consecutive days at over 43°C, Phoenix in Arizona (United States) is suffocating. The heat is deadly. Nearly 20 people have already died. City hospitals are beginning to be overwhelmed. “We are almost at the same influx as during the last wave of the Covid“says R. Michael White. From Florida to California, the temperatures do not weaken, and the heat begins to spread towards the north of the United States.
Up to 54°C in Death Valley
In Las Vegas (Nevada, USA), the streets are deserted and the temperature reaches 46°C. Getting around the city on foot has become a real ordeal. “I can’t handle it, I’m going to pass out”comments a woman. But for the workers, there is no choice but to stay outside, busy building a road. “I have the impression that we are going to burn, that everyone is going to catch fire“, says a worker. Tomorrow, the temperature in Death Valley is expected to rise to 54°C.
