Saturday, September 30, at the Capitol, just three hours before the deadline, the American Congress narrowly avoided a “shutdown“, a paralysis of its public services, and found an agreement to continue financing its administration. “In 24 hours, we went from budget cuts that were devastating to the health and safety of Americans to a deal“, has explained Hakeem Jeffriesleader of the elected Democrats in the House of Representatives.
45 days to agree on the future budget
One year before the presidential election, the standoff was political. Donald Trump, who could be new candidatecalled on his supporters in Congress to paralyze the federal state to make the Democrats bend. However, on Saturday evening, Kevin McCarthy, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, proposed a last-minute measure to avoid the “shutdown“. This measure, however, excludes any new financial aid to Ukraine. American parliamentarians have 45 days to agree on the future budget.
