In Mayotte, hundreds of gendarmes were deployed as reinforcements on Friday, April 21. The objective is to send illegal migrants back to the neighboring islands of the Comoros. The island is plunged more and more into a climate of violence.

Seen from the sky, the archipelago is heavenly with its turquoise water and fine sandy beaches. But Mayotte is also the island of slums and crime so violent that college students are escorted by the police to get on their bus. Police presence is now mandatory according to the headmaster of the establishment. The attacks take place even in the school bus, sometimes with machetes. Clashes also take place with the police in the middle of the houses.

77% of the inhabitants live below the poverty line

Crime has increased sharply in Mayotte in recent months. Armed thefts have increased by +121% in one year. An explosive situation linked in particular to a difficult economic context. “The ‘official’ unemployment rate is 30%, which is enormous for a territory of the Republic”says Driss Aït Youssef, doctor of public law. 77% of the inhabitants live below the poverty line, five times more than in mainland France. Some do not even have access to drinking water.
