“Two Sisters”, Sarah Davachi | The duty

On Two Sisters as elsewhere in her work, the composer and great organ expert Sarah Davachi invites us to take an interest in her conception of music, her choice of timbres and instruments (an extremely rare 18th century Italian organe century, one of the largest carillons in the world, among others), her exploration of the modal scale in composition, the links she makes between early and contemporary music, etc. Even better: you can simply abandon yourself to the atmosphere of this album made up of nine long, soothing and contemplative pieces with the textures of organs, strings and winds (very present on the two parts of Icon Studiesmagnificent), singing on the touching Alas, Departing. Scholarly music if you seek to learn between the notes, but also easy to access, the beauty of the organs, its meticulous variations of timbres plunging us into a kind of dream; an approach reminiscent of that of the composer Pauline Oliveros and her concept of deep listening. This record overwhelms us, listening to it forces us to take a break from everyday life.
