They are 42 and 24 years old. Two men were indicted and remanded in custody for burglaries in several churches, mainly in Ile-de-France, the Créteil prosecutor’s office reported on Friday April 8. In police custody since Wednesday, the two men were indicted for theft in an organized gang.

Arrest warrants have been issued for other suspects who are still wanted, the prosecution said.

All are suspected of having stolen for “several tens of thousands of euros”, “chalices, holy water fonts” and money contained in the trunks of churches (which collect donations from the faithful), in Val-de-Marne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis and in Paris, according to a police source. They would also have robbed the “safe” of the cathedral of Grenoble.

In January, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin announced funding of four million euros for the security of places of worship during a trip to Seine-Saint-Denis after acts of vandalism observed at the church of Saint -Pierre de Bondy and the Saint-Germain-L’Auxerrois church in Romainville.
