Two French women were killed in a fire in a building in Montreal, Canada, local police authorities said on Saturday, October 5. The disaster took place on Friday, in the Old Montreal district. “Two victims were located and extricated from the rubble”announced David Shane, of the City of Montreal police department. “They are Léonor Giraudie, 43 years old, and her daughter Vérane Reynaud Geraudie, 7 years old, both from France.”

“Twenty-five people were reportedly present in the building when the fire broke out. Twenty-three of these people were traced by our investigators. Two of these people were injured”continued David Shane in a press briefing. Martin Guilbault, division head of the Montreal Fire Department, declared that the windows of the burned building were not an aggravating factor during the incident and that the building complied with fire prevention standards.

A criminal investigation was opened by the police. “The police department opened a criminal investigation into major crimes yesterday (Friday) and all leads will be taken into account. I am confident that the determination of the investigators will shed light on this tragedy”declared Saturday Valérie Plante, mayor of Montreal, on.
