Tuesday in the NHL | Matthews hits 60-goal milestone in Leafs win over Wings

The league’s top scorer, Auston Matthews hit the 60-goal mark with a brace on Tuesday, helping the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

There hadn’t been a 60-goal scorer in the league since 2011-12 (Steven Stamkos).

Matthews scored his first goal of the game with a fake backhand late in the second period. He completed the double early in the third period, using a wrist shot from the slot.

John Tavares also scored for the Leafs. They will have the advantage of the ice in the first round of the playoffs, against Boston or Tampa Bay.

William Nylander provided two assists and Jack Campbell made 20 saves for his fifth shutout this season.

Toronto set a club mark with a 30and win at home this season.

Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 33 shots for the Red Wings.

Stamkos reaches 100 points in season for first time in career

Steven Stamkos reached 100 points in a season for the first time in his career by scoring two goals and assisting in two more as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Tuesday .

Stamkos joined the select club when he threaded the needle in the middle period to make it 3-1. His previous best total was in 2018-19 when he scored 98 points.

Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves for the Lightning, who have won in their last four outings.

Oliver Bjorkstrand hit the target for the Blue Jackets. Elvis Merzlikins has stopped 28 shots for the Ohio club, which has won just one of its last six games.

Dobson scores the game-winning goal and the Islanders beat the Capitals

Noah Dobson scored the key power-play goal on Tuesday, guiding the New York Islanders to a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals.

Dobson earned a 13and goal this season at the start of the third period.

Casey Cizikas scored shorthanded, while Ryan Pulock and Anders Lee were the other scorers for the winners.

Washington had the chance to steal third place in the Metropolitan section from the Penguins, beaten at home by Edmonton.

Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves, helping the Islanders end a five-game losing streak.

The Capitals were without captain Alexander Ovechkin with an upper body injury.

McDavid and the Oilers have the upper hand over Crosby and the Penguins

Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists to edge Sidney Crosby as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 on Tuesday.

McDavid had his 22and four-point night in the NHL and brought his total points to 122 this season, a league-high.

Evander Kane has scored for the sixth time in his last four meetings. Evan Bouchard, Zach Hyman and Zack Kassian also shone the red light for the Oilers, who went 17-4-2 in their last 23 games.

Mike Smith stopped 33 shots to sign a ninth consecutive victory.

Jeff Carter led the charge for the Penguins, who lost at home against the Oilers for the first time since 2006.

Casey DeSmith made 37 saves for the Penguins, who had to manage without the services of goaltender Tristan Jarry for a fifth straight game.

Drake Batherson gives the Senators the victory in overtime

Drake Batherson completed a brace in overtime as the Ottawa Senators defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-4 on Tuesday.

Tim Stutzle also scored twice, including his first career shorthanded goal.

Thomas Chabot was the other scorer for the Senators, who have won their last four games.

Brady Tkachuk had three assists and Anton Forsberg made 37 saves.

Nolan Foote scored twice for the Devils, defeated for the fourth time in a row.

Pavel Zacha and Yegor Sharangovich also scored in a losing cause.

Getting his first start since mid-January, Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 29 shots.

Hurricanes beat Rangers to win Metropolitan Division

Vincent Trochek had a goal and an assist, rookie goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 31 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 on Tuesday to clinch first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Martinook also scored for the Hurricanes. Brady Skjei had two assists.

The Hurricanes won a second straight division title. They established a new team with 53 wins and 114 points.

Kochetkov, making his second start and third straight game, stopped 31 shots. He went 3-0-0.

Chris Kreider scored his 52and net of the season for the Rangers, who are guaranteed to finish second in the Metropolitan Division.

Jacob Trouba and Alexis Lafrenière also scored, and Igor Shesterkin finished with 31 saves.

The Rangers will take over the collar on Wednesday night when they host the Montreal Canadiens.

Marchand scores a 32and goal and the Bruins deserve a third straight win

Brad Marchand tallied a 32and net and the Boston Bruins inflicted a 4-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

Marchand completed the scoring in an empty net.

Erik Haula, Taylor Hall and Jake DeBrusk also scored for the Bruins, who won a third straight game.

DeBrusk converted the rebound from a Marchand shot to break the tie 2-2 in the second period.

Patrice Bergeron provided two assists, as did David Pastrnak.

Linus Ullmark made 19 saves, yielding only to Gustav Forsling and Sam Reinhart.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 34 shots.

Florida only shot three times in the first period.

The team will prepare to visit the Senators on Thursday.

The Coyotes move away from the Canadiens and the NHL’s bottom tier

Travis Boyd scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period and the Arizona Coyotes solidified their grip on the NHL’s second-bottom spot by ending the Minnesota Wild’s winning streak. 5-3, Tuesday.

The Wild, who had won their last 10 games before facing the Coyotes, were trying to secure home-ice advantage for their first-round series against the St. Louis Blues.

Anton Stralman, Antoine Roussel, Jack McBain and Phil Kessel also hit the target for the Coyotes, who ended their 10-game losing streak.

Karel Vejmelka stopped 34 shots in the win. His vis-à-vis, Marc-André Fleury, made 21 saves.

Joel Eriksson Ek, Marcus Foligno and Ryan Hartman scored for the Wild.

Wild rookie Matt Boldy picked up an assist on Hartman’s goal and extended his game streak with a point to 10.
