Brent Burns scored his 11e goal of the season and Frederik Andersen stopped 34 shots to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Tuesday.

Winner of the Norris Trophy in 2017, Burns scored with a shot from the point at 15:00 in the first period.

Paul Stastny, as well as Stefan Noeson on the power play, scored the other goals for the Hurricanes.

Those goals and Andersen’s strong performance helped the team bounce back from a 6-2 loss to Rangers at home at the weekend.

The Hurricanes have won 10 of their last 12 games.

They also sit at the top of the Metropolitan section.

The Capitals were without captain Alexander Ovechkin, star defenseman John Carlson and fourth center Nic Dowd.

Ovechkin was not with the team on Tuesday for family reasons. Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette expects his forward to miss the rest of the week.

Carlson hasn’t played since Dec. 23, when he was hit in the face by a slap shot. As for Dowd, he has missed the last 10 games due to injury.

Joe Snively, in the lineup to replace Ovechkin and Aliaksei Protas, had a goal and an assist. Snively set the table for TJ Oshie’s goal, before scoring against Andersen, his first since February 17, 2022.

Kuemper made 27 saves and could hardly be blamed on the Hurricanes’ goals. Trevor van Riemsdyk thought he had tied the game in the third period, but his goal was disallowed for goaltender interference.

New Jersey Devils defenseman Ryan Graves (33) scores past Columbus Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner (38), defenseman Erik Gudbranson (44), goaltender Elvis Merzlikins (90) and Devils forward Dawson Mercer (91) during the third period.

Ryan Graves scored with 1.4 seconds remaining and the New Jersey Devils beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 on Tuesday night for their fourth win in five games.

Yegor Sharangovich and Jesper Bratt scored the other Devils goals, and Graves also had an assist.

Vitek Vanecek stopped 31 shots for the Devils, who sit three points behind the Carolina Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division.

Adam Boqvist and Johnny Gaudreau have fought back for the Jackets, who have lost five of their last six games. Elvis Merzlikins stopped 29 shots.

The teams each scored in the first two periods.

Sharangovich made it 1-0 after 10:46 minutes, and Gaudreau equalized on a power play goal with 1.3 seconds left in the period.

Bratt’s goal came seven seconds into the second half, before Boqvist equalized again with four minutes 41 remaining in the period, with his first goal of the year.

New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin (30), New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield (24) and Ottawa Senators left wing Tim Stutzle (18)

Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson scored in the shootout as the Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders 3-2 on Tuesday.

Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist, while Kevin Mandolese finished the game with 46 saves for the Senators.

It was the sixth win in seven games for Ottawa.

Mandolese blocked Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri’s shootout attempts, earning his first career NHL win in his first game.

A native of Blainville, Mandolese was a Senators sixth-round pick in 2018. He shone with Cape Breton in the QMJHL.

Ryan Pulock and Brock Nelson scored for the Islanders.

Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves, but his team lost a third game in a row.

The Islanders had a power play advantage in overtime when the Senators were penalized for having too many players on the ice.

Nelson’s goal tied the game at 2-2 in the third period as the team played one man up. Noah Dobson and Mathew Barzal picked up assists on the goal.

With his net, Nelson extended his streak to 11 games with at least one point, a career high.

Tkachuk had scored the previous goal, also on the power play, early in that same period. Stutzle handed the puck to the Senators captain, well installed in the slot, and he only had to redirect it behind Sorokin.

Stutzle scored his 24e goal of the season when he tied the game 1-1 earlier in the game. His shot deflected off Pulock’s stick, before entering the net.

Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau was out of the game with an upper body injury. It will be reassessed on a daily basis.

Brayden Schenn had two goals as the St. Louis Blues edged the Florida Panthers 6-2 on Tuesday.

Nick Leddy scored his second goal of the season, in his 900e National League game.

Ryan O’Reilly, Jordan Kyrou and Ivan Barbashev also threaded the needle for the Blues.

The club scored a second win in a row, on the heels of five straight defeats.

Jordan Binnington made 34 saves, being beaten only by Carter Verhaeghe and Eetu Luostarinen.

Schenn first hit the mark in the middle of the first twenty, during a power play.

He added his 15e goal of the season early in the second period, with a wrist shot.

O’Reilly and Kyrou scored 20 seconds apart in the third period, making it 5-1.

Kyrou leads the Blues with 24 goals this season.

Spencer Knight stopped 22 shots in a losing cause.
