TSX up, US markets closed

(Toronto) Canada’s main stock index was up in late morning trading, helped by strength in the telecommunications, utilities and energy sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index rose 25.96 points to 22,249.63.

The advance came as U.S. stock markets were closed for the July 4 holiday.

The Canadian dollar was trading at 73.46 US cents, compared with 73.33 US cents on Wednesday.

On Friday, Statistics Canada will release the Labour Force Survey report.

Commodity markets are also closed to regular trading.
