TRUE OR FALSE. Is crime increasing in France? – (Franceinfo)
Brice Hortefeux argued that violence was increasing in France, with 1,000 attacks per day and an increase of more than 60% since 2017.
Violence is exploding in France, with around 1,000 attacks per day, according to Brice Hortefeux, guest of LCI, Wednesday January 10. This figure comes from the latest report from the Ministry of the Interior, which lists data from the police and gendarmerie. During the year 2023, the Ministry of the Interior recorded 362,000 incidents of intentional assault and battery. “Former minister says there is an increase of 63% compared to 2017”explains Anaïs Crouts, journalist at the cell “True or false”.
Other violence is decreasing
In 2017, 220,000 incidents of intentional injury were recorded and this represents an increase of 61% in 2023. The other indicators of violence are not experiencing such a spectacular change and are decreasing in certain cases. In 2017, there were just under 80 homicides per month, compared to around 90 per month in 2023. But in the 1990s or 2000s, homicides were more numerous.
The number of sexual violence has increased enormously since 2017, but this increase must be recontextualized in the movement to free speech around this subject. Other indicators, such as armed robberies, violent or non-violent thefts are decreasing.
