Trout opening

It was this Saturday, March 12 that the start of trout fishing was given, since this morning you could start dipping your line from 6:53 a.m. A real relief for fishermen impatient to find their favorite fish tells us Bruno Garcia of the Charente-Maritime fishing federation at the microphone of France Bleu la Rochelle:

Bruno Garcia:

Especially for budding anglers who have suffered from sleep disturbances during those endless nights leading up to this big moment. There is also this feeling of well-being that we feel at the start of the season on the water’s edge, despite the somewhat gloomy weather conditions, the temperatures are still milder than in February and then there are the 10 tons of trout dumped for this opening. Enough arguments not to miss this opening.

What are we fishing with today?

If in normal times for this trout opening which very regularly takes place with fairly high water levels I have a slight preference for the earthworm, I will not be promoting the earthworm today. Very regularly in March our waterways benefited from one or even several floods. Floods which have had the effect of leaching the soil and consequently of carrying a multitude of earthworms into the waterways, which of course have become part of the daily diet of the trout. This is not the case this year.

Rather minnow then?

Minnow, spoon, small lure but be careful only in 1st category. In 2nd category all that is prohibited until the opening of the pike. The advantage of these techniques is quite simply that they allow instant hooking. Today you have very clear waters, a lot of people on the edge of the water and inevitably the fish will be wary. We must favor anything that will trigger a reflex attack in the fish, an aggressive approach rather than eating behavior.

No minnow, no spoon, no lure in 2nd category so what is the substitute in these conditions?

A fine line with a larva, a moth for example which will not require effort to be engaged and also allow instantaneous reaction from the fisherman.

The little advice

I will repeat what I have already said, you are, in the majority of situations, in the 1st category, in the private domain. I don’t want to lecture fishermen, but every year we see signs prohibiting access to rivers and therefore fishing. So respect the riparian owners. You are indeed with them.

The final word

I told you last week that the trout opening was the first big time of the year. It’s wrong ! the first event of the year is my mom’s birthday which is today. Happy birthday Josiane for your 82 years.
