Triggering an alarm | An elementary school evacuated in Westmount

An elementary school was evacuated in Westmount on Wednesday afternoon after the unexplained triggering of an alarm relating to the presence of an armed individual.

The alert (called “silver code”) would have been broadcast on the intercom system of Roslyn Elementary School, located on Westmount Avenue, leading classes to go into lockdown.

However, initial checks by the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) did not detect any threats in the building. No shots were heard and no injuries were reported. School managers authorized to trigger this alert code told police that they had not done so.

“At this stage, we are considering an unfounded appeal, but it is not yet over,” said Sabrina Gauthier, spokesperson for the SPVM.

The police decided to follow the procedure for this type of alert and to evacuate all the occupants of the building, in order to be able to check it from top to bottom. On social networks, we can see images of police officers surrounding the school, weapons in hand.

SPVM investigators will then try to understand who triggered this alarm.
