“I’m still happy, even if I was aiming a little better. It’s my swimming that didn’t allow me to do better. I missed the hunting squad [en vélo]so it put me in a difficult position, ”supported Legault, who completed the Olympic distance course (1.5 kilometers of swimming, 40 kilometers of cycling and 10 kilometers of running in a time of 1 hour 57 minutes 42 seconds.

Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown (1:51:44) was fastest ahead of France’s Léonie Periault and reigning Olympic champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda.

The Quebecer lost contact with the first swimmers at the start of the last lap and once out of the water, she missed the right pace by about ten seconds. The athlete from Île-Perrot therefore found herself in the third group.

The rain that fell before the race made the road slippery and the 26-year-old athlete preferred to play it safe in the technical sections of the bike course to avoid falling. After the second transition, she started her 10 kilometer run in catch-up mode.

“I came back to four or five girls. It was motivating to catch them, but if I had been in the front peloton, I would have been with fast girls and I could have finished higher in the standings. But hey, I’m taking it one step at a time and I’m still happy with the race. I want even more! »

The only Quebecer registered in the men’s event, Charles Paquet was forced to retire from the running portion. Martin Sobey, 22andwas the only representative of the country to reach the finish line of the race where the Olympian Tyler Mislawchuk also retired.

According to Legault, Paquet suffered from cramps at the end of the bike course. “In transition, he had trouble putting on his shoes and then it just didn’t work. »

Legault will be back in Quebec to prepare for the World Cup in Huatulco, Mexico, in mid-June.
