A French company is developing a treatment that could reduce their mortality by more than 50%. Journalist and doctor Damien Mascret explains the concept on the set of 20 Heures.

A French company is developing a treatment that could reduce stroke mortality by more than 50%. It would be effective provided it is administered at the first symptoms. “We must act quickly when a stroke occurs due to a blood clot. This new treatment helps thin the blood. Because when an artery becomes blocked, it means that part of the brain is no longer oxygenated”explains Damien Mascret.

Clinical trials expected

The journalist recalls that “even when we manage to unblock the artery, the resumption of blood circulation does not always go very well in the brain. And, unfortunately, 60% of patients have after-effects”. With this new treatment, “a clinical trial has just shown that we obtained better reperfusion, and without causing hemorrhages in the brain. It now remains to be seen whether the benefit is confirmed in a larger clinical trial”concludes Damien Mascret.
