The little boy from Toy Story, Andy, had discovered the hero Buzz Lightyear in a film that bears his name, which the Disney-Pixar studios unveil to us on Wednesday June 22. Good idea, but the film does not propel us into the stars.

Buzz Lightning, the space ranger, is stranded with a crew of young pioneers on a distant planet. His mission will be to bring all these little people home, while the terrible Zurg and his army of robots will do everything to stop him.

Simplistic in its plot, Buzz Lightning the rest throughout a first part where the film targets the youngest audience, while Toy Story united children and adults. After Woody, Buzz is Andy’s second favorite toy. Cabotin like no other, he gets caught in Toy Story for a real space hero, constantly put in his place by the cowboy. By taking it down to the nitty-gritty, director Angus MacLane loses a lot of its charm.

The last third of the film returns to a less childish tone, but does not find the verve of the original hero. A controversy arose from the kiss between two married heroines in the film. What is worth to Buzz Lightning to be banned in fourteen countries and territories in the Middle East and Asia. The motif is quite unexpected in the light-hearted context of the film. It responds to a request from Disney and Pixar employees to commit to LGBT+ people. Of which act.

If the process is valid for the trivialization of what is still apprehended as marginal by many, it brings nothing from a dramatic point of view, and appears as a societal obligation. An obligation that we find in that of devoting a film to Buzz Lightyear, given the popularity of the hero. Disney-Pixar doesn’t make the most of it, reducing its space ranger to an overly down-to-earth character.
