Who will be the next British Prime Minister? The British vote on Thursday, July 4, for general elections. After 14 years in power, the Conservatives could be beaten by Labour.
Thursday, July 4th could be a turning point in the British political landscape. Voters have been going to the polls since early morning. According to all the polls, the Conservative Party is about to suffer a heavy defeat. “They had 14 years in power, and they got the country into trouble”confides a voter. Falling purchasing power, deterioration of public services and the consequences of Brexit are fuelling British discontent.
They are likely to turn overwhelmingly to the centre-left Labour Party. Its leader, Keir Starmer, entered politics late in life. He expects to become prime minister. “He is a trained lawyer, with little charisma, almost the opposite of Boris Johnson”describes Brian Gosschalk, of the Ipsos polling institute. Breaking with the untenable promises of the former Brexit supporters, he has simply promised the return of seriousness to power. The results will be known tonight.
