Cigarette consumption among the French has fallen thanks to the increase in the price of a pack. A Senate report even recommends continuing this increase to reach 25 euros by 2040.
Will buying a pack of cigarettes cost as much as a meal at a restaurant in the future? 25 euros per package in 2040, this is what a senatorial report recommends. The Minister of Health appeared, on Friday May 31, to approve the request. “I think that increasing prices can potentially deter, but that is not enough, everyone must be aware of the consequences of tobacco on the health of our fellow citizens”explained Catherine Vautrin on France Inter.
What do the first concerned people say? There are die-hard smokers who know they won’t be able to do without it and those who think it’s a good idea, for themselves or for others. For ten years, the price of the package has continued to increase, reaching today an average of 12 euros. The Senate is proposing a progressive increase of 5% per year, which would lead, for example, to 16 euros in 2030 and therefore 25 euros in 2040.
