“Too bad for the red lines, it’s our future that we play through Ukraine”, insists Thursday, February 9 on franceinfo Hélène Blanc, political scientist specializing in the Slavic world, while Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president is in Brussels Thursday to call on the 27 Member States to meet kyiv’s armament needs. The CNRS researcher wonders about these “red lines” in support of Ukraine “Who drew these red lines? Russia or the Europeans?” The political scientist calls for awareness of what is at stake in the war in Ukraine.

“People don’t understand that if Ukraine was defeated, maybe Vladimir Putin would then want to take care of Poland, the Baltic States, Moldova”, emphasizes Hélène Blanc. According to the researcher, Vladimir Putin considers Western countries as enemies, “and the enemies are treated as such”.

“Defense of Europe”

On European support for Ukraine, Hélène Blanc believes that “this war is very talkative” and “instead of swinging sentences, it would be better to act.” The researcher denounces the slowness of European deliveries, considering that “weapons always arrive late”, jeopardizing the Ukrainian defense in the event of a new Russian offensive. Hélène Blanc considers, like Volodymyr Zelensky before the European Parliament, “that by giving arms to Ukraine, we are also defending ourselves, we are defending Europe.”
