Russian troops launched an offensive on Tuesday, May 3, against the Azovstal steelworks in Ukraine, the last pocket of resistance in Mariupol. A hundred civilians were able to be evacuated, but 200 people are still refugees there.
The assault launched by Russian forces in Mariupol (Ukraine) is underway on Tuesday, May 3. The objective is to take the Azovstal factory, where Ukrainian fighters and civilians are entrenched. “The shells are hitting their position, the artillery is in action, the air force is trying to push the enemy who has become much more active recently”comments a Russian journalist.
The Azovstal factory is the last stronghold in Ukrainian hands. Inside are ultra-nationalist militants from the Azov Battalion. “This Russian assault is made with the support of armored vehicles, tanks, attempts to land troops, with the help of boats and a large number of infantry elements”comments Sviatoslav Palamar, Commander of the Azov Regiment. Since Sunday May 1, more than 200 civilians have fled the factory. There would remain as many on the spot, according to the Ukrainian authorities. The civilians who arrived in Zaporijia (Ukraine) are traumatized.
