Thunder Bay police have found themselves in the crosshairs of Ontario’s policing watchdog for allegedly twice ignoring 911 calls reporting a case of domestic violence that ended in the death of a 21 year old woman.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement posted on its website Wednesday that it is investigating the role played by Thunder Bay police in the death of a woman in the night of December 29 to 30.
According to information provided by the SIU, police received a first call around 2 a.m. reporting a quarrel at a residence on Ray Boulevard.
Subsequently, a second call was made to 911 to “cancel” the first call.
In both cases, no police went to the scene to make sure everything was okay, the SIU noted.
It finally took a third call to 911 reporting the victim’s death for the police to deign to go to the home.
The SIU has not released any further details about its investigation, including what caused the 21-year-old woman’s death or whether a suspect has been arrested.
Thunder Bay police, for their part, had not reported this incident in any way before it was revealed by the SIU. The police, for their part, indicated to the media TBnewswatch that they are continuing their investigation into the woman’s death and that they will not provide further details given the involvement of the SIU in this matter.
