MP Hélène David said that after two terms, she left politics with “the feeling of accomplishment”. She was first elected in the riding of Outremont in 2014, then in the riding of Marguerite-Bourgeoys in 2018. She held the positions of Minister for the Protection and Promotion of the French language, Minister of Culture and Communications, Minister of Higher Education, as well as Minister responsible for the Status of Women. The leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, Dominique Anglade, made a point of underlining the “huge contribution” of Ms.me David.

MNA Nicole Ménard, for her part, is retiring after five terms. “Throughout my political career, I have devoted myself entirely to improving the quality of life of the citizens of Laporte and by comparing my riding today versus what it was when I arrived in 2007, I leave with a sense of accomplishment,” she said. Dominique Anglade thanked the MP who left “a mark on thousands of Quebecers”. “I will always remember the great rigor and class of Nicole, whom I sincerely thank for these years of participation in the economic and social development of Quebec,” she wrote.

Jean Rousselle, MP for Vimont, announced with “a heavy heart” that he was leaving politics after “long reflection”. Elected for the first time in 2012, he was the official opposition critic for ethics and integrity issues in public procurement, labor and then agriculture. Mme Anglade paid tribute to the politician highlighting his contribution. “A man of integrity, generous and open to the world, Jean will have marked the county of Vimont which is and will always remain a big family for him,” wrote the Liberal leader, in a press release.

With this announcement by Mr. Rousselle, this is the third departure of Liberal MPs in Laval. Last Saturday, the member for Fabre, Monique Sauvé, announced that she would bow out in the fall. Last December, former Liberal minister Francine Charbonneau announced that she would not stand for re-election in the riding of Mille-Îles.

Last week, Liberal MP Christine St-Pierre confirmed that she would not run in the next election. MPs and former ministers Gaétan Barrette and Lise Thériault have already announced that they will not be candidates in the fall of 2022.
