Three people died after an overnight stabbing attack in Ottawa, including a man who was shot dead by police, the Ontario police watchdog said Tuesday.
Officers attended a residence on Anoka Street following a 911 call at 10:30 p.m. Monday, during which emergency services were notified that someone had been stabbed and that screams could be heard, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement.
When police arrived, they saw a man stabbing a woman in the street, the SIU said. Preliminary information suggests he refused to drop the knife, so three officers fired and the man was hit. He was declared dead on the spot.
The woman was also injured by police gunfire and was taken to hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, the SIU said. Police later found the bodies of two other women nearby.
The Ottawa Police Homicide Unit is investigating the stabbing deaths and the SIU is investigating the man’s death, in which police are involved.
Investigators are seeking to confirm the identities of the man and woman who were shot by police, the SIU said.
