Immigration law: “this text is firmness”, says Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior
Immigration law: “this text is firm”, says Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior – (France 2)
The 20 Hours welcomes Gérald Darmanin, Sunday November 5. He comes to talk about the opening of debates on the immigration law.
According to an OpinionWay survey, 87% of French people want the rules to change on immigration. Asked about the next immigration law to be debated, Gérald Darmanin affirms “that his job is to protect the French. This piece of legislation was requested by the President of the Republic (…) it is always difficult to talk about immigration. There are a lot of obstructions, and there are women and men behind immigration. (…) This text is firmness, which is supported by the French”.
“What matters is the general interest”
However, for the law to pass, compromises and agreements will have to be made. Questioned about article 3, the Minister of the Interior emphasizes that “the French want to be able to welcome the nanny, the restaurant waiter and they want to be able to keep delinquents away, that’s what this text wants. Be tougher against delinquent foreigners, expel them all and at the same time understand that there are people who are being asked to regularize. There is a political compromise to be found. What matters is the general interest”concludes Gérald Darmanin.
