Received initially in Paris by Emmanuel Macron, the Chinese president goes to the Hautes-Pyrénées on Tuesday May 7. To talk about it, Emmanuel Véron, geographer specializing in contemporary China and international relations, is a guest on 11/13 info.
Visiting France, Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke at length with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, about trade between their two countries. Tuesday May 7, he goes to the French mountains, in Hautes-Pyrénées. As they exited the plane, the red carpet was rolled out for the presidents. It could be a diplomatic rapprochement, according to Emmanuel Véron, geographer specializing in contemporary China and international relations. “It was, on the French diplomacy side, interesting to gradually bring the Chinese president to a somewhat intimate place or one with a family connotation”notes the specialist.
A first for a Chinese head of state
“It is the Hautes-Pyrénées which were chosen, it is a first”, underlines Emmanuel Véron. The Chinese president, accompanied by Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron, must notably go to the Col du Tourmalet, where temperatures are freezing in places. “The weather can perhaps help to freshen up the relationship a little.” notes the geographer.
