A new milestone was reached this Sunday at Matmut-Atlantique, in the nightmarish season of the Girondins de Bordeaux. First on the field, where the Girondins de Bordeaux, even at 11 against 9 for half time, were unable to score a goal against Montpellier, and tilted (0-2) at home. In the stands then and above all, where the Ultramarines, the main group of Girondins supporters have seemed to designate a new scapegoat: goalkeeper Benoît Costil.
It all started in the heart of the first half, during a clash between Costil, who was returning after missing seven games through injury, and his Bosnian defender Anel Ahmedodzic, who criticized him for not having intervened on a pass deep in Montpellier. The Bordeaux goalkeeper then sharply reprimands his defender and grabs him by the jersey. Le Virage sud then takes sides against Costil, and whistles him all the end of the first half. At the break, Costil approaches the bend and has a almost head-to-head altercation with Florian Brunet, the leader of the Ultramarines. He then returns to the locker room under insults and bottle throwing.
In the evening, the reaction of the Bordeaux ultras falls on Twitter. The group of supporters demand the departure of their goalkeeper, accusing him of “scandalous, sometimes racist behavior”, in a series of two tweets which also targets ex-captain Laurent Koscielny, sidelined. All this without providing specific elements.
At the end of the match, the international goalkeeper was not present during the face-to-face between the players and 200 ultras at the exit of the stadium. The club has not yet communicated officially, but Gérard Lopez, also on Twitter, seems to take the side of the supporters, whose disgust he says he understands.
According to the club, the president of the Girondins went to meet the supporters under the grandstand for about ten minutes at halftime on Sunday. On the side of Benoît Costil, the reaction was not long in coming: according to Clément Carpentier, journalist at 20 minutes and football specialist for France Bleu Gironde, Costil announced on Sunday evening to several players and some employees that he was going to leave the club. Contacted this Monday morning the Ultramarines have decided not to communicate for the moment.
