An incredible story is judged from Monday, November 7 at the court of Nancy, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The main suspect is a Ukrainian who posed as a millionaire wanting to save the castle of La Rochepot, in Burgundy, which he had bought. In reality, he is a crook, who had pretended to be dead in his country in order to escape justice.
It all started with a 12th century castle located in the small village of La Rochepot (Côte-d’Or), in Burgundy. In 2015, a mysterious businessman, Dmitri Malinovsky offers the castle for a sum of 2.5 million euros. The Ukrainian oligarch hired local craftsmen to do the renovations, but he never paid the bills. Manuel Desbois, journalist at “Bien Public”, investigated the rich lord.
Investigators discovered that Dmitri Malinovsky is a fraudster actively wanted by the Ukrainian justice system. To escape him, the businessman faked an accident and provided a fake death certificate in 2014. On October 5, 2018, he was arrested at the castle. The gendarmes discovered five passports, a suitcase of cash, numerous works of art and a rolls of collection. Dmitri’s trial Malinovsky and six of his alleged accomplices will last three weeks. He could be expelled from French territory and the castle sold in order to pay his debts.
