The Toronto Stock Exchange loses more than 200 points

The Toronto Stock Exchange fell more than 200 points late Tuesday morning, dragged down by losses in the energy and base metals sectors, as well as lower oil prices.

The Toronto floor’s S&P/TSX Composite Index erased 246.93 points to 19,589.19 points.

In New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 237.21 points to 31,861.78 points. The broader S&P 500 index slid 38.55 points to 3,992.06 points, while the Nasdaq Composite index depreciated 143.01 points to 11,874.66 points.

In the currency market, the Canadian dollar was trading at 76.43 cents US, down from its average price of 76.87 cents US the previous day.

Crude oil prices fell US$4.35 to US$92.66 a barrel, while natural gas fell 38 US cents to US$8.96 per million BTU.

The price of gold fell US$14.20 to US$1735.50 an ounce and that of copper dropped 5 cents US to US$3.56 a pound.
