The University of Lille has decided to ban the La France insoumise conference scheduled for Thursday April 18 on “Palestinian news”, because the conditions for “guaranteeing the serenity of the debates are no longer met”, justified the presidency on Wednesday. Jean Luc Mélenchon and Rima Hassan, a lawyer of Palestinian origin candidate for the European elections for LFI, were to participate. Since then, socialist and rebellious elected officials have been torn apart over the cancellation of the event.

For LFI deputy David Guiraud, the socialists have clearly abandoned Gaza. “I believe that a part of the left has not been interested for years in what is happening in Gaza, and therefore they are swallowed up by all the elements of language that can come from the most extreme elements of the pro -Israelis”castigates the MP. “I regret it, but at the same time we have been all alone for so many months that I am not at all surprised that these criticisms also come partly from the left,” adds the one who also denounced a “political censorship”.

A “vain controversy” for the PS

In the crosshairs of the Insoumis, the PS deputy Jérome Guedj, who expressed reservations about this conference. In a press release this afternoon, the Insoumis clearly designate the elected official as one of the main people responsible for the cancellation, which would have “largely launched the offensive on this conference based on fallacious elements”. “I never asked for the ban”, Jérome Guedj then defended himself. The boss of the PS, Olivier Faure, for his part deplores “vain controversy” in a publication on X.

Behind the scenes, the socialists sharply criticize the position of the Insoumis on the war in the Middle East. “Jean Luc Mélenchon exploits the conflict and plays a very dangerous game”, analyzes a senior figure at the PS. For this party official, the former presidential candidate wants to transform the European elections into a referendum for or against stopping the fighting in Gaza.
