The appeal trial for the attack of July 14, 2016 in Nice, in the Alpes-Maritimes, opens Monday April 22. Around ten children present during the tragedy will speak in court. Ornella, a young girl who was already able to testify at the first trial, spoke to France Télévisions.

“I didn’t have a childhood. Really, it ended that night. On July 15, 2016, I was a different person. I was no longer 12-year-old Ornella.”. In 2016, Ornella narrowly escaped the crazy driver from Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). Eight years later, she has forgotten nothing about that night. Today, it cannot yet completely cross the Promenade des Anglais. “There are certain places, like from Negresco, where I don’t allow myself to go, because that’s where I experienced the tragedy”she says.

“Everything came free” after his trial testimony

At the first trial for the Nice attack, she was 17 years old and therefore had the right to testify. Leaving the audience, she regained her lightness. “Everything was released. The weight that I had on my shoulders went away. Everything was better”, Ornella recalls. On July 14, 2016, more than 3,000 children were present on the Promenade des Anglais. Monday, April 22, around ten of them will speak before the court, in the hope, like Ornella, of moving forward.
