The man suspected of having killed a GIGN gendarme, during an operation against illegal gold panning at the end of March in Guyana, was transferred to Martinique where he was indicted and placed in pre-trial detention on Thursday April 13, according to the parquet floor of Fort-de-France. This 20-year-old Brazilian was arrested on Saturday in the Guyanese forest after having announced his intention to surrender.

“He was in a rather catastrophic situation in the forest”said Clarisse Taron, the public prosecutor of Fort-de-France, adding that the man had denounced himself “by asking in exchange to have his life saved”. Presented Thursday to an investigating judge, he was indicted for intentional homicide in an organized gang and criminal association. He was placed in pre-trial detention at the Ducos penitentiary center in Martinique.

The GIGN policeman, Arnaud Blanc, 35, died while taking part in an operation against illegal gold panning on the clandestine site of Dorlin, in the heart of Guyana. Engaged since 2009 in the national gendarmerie, he had served in Cayenne since 2019.
