Thursday January 11, Rachida Dati was surprisingly named head of the Ministry of Culture within the government of Gabriel Attal.
A figure of the French right, the arrival of Rachida Dati within the government was unexpected. Gabriel Attal’s new Minister of Culture was above all close to Nicolas Sarkozy since the 2000s and a member of the Republicans. Coming from a modest background, the minister stands out for her exemplary career. In 2007, she was appointed Keeper of the Seals by the former president and distinguished herself by her reform of the judicial map.
Figurehead of Sarkozysm
Elected in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, she is often in disagreement with the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, who wanted “good luck to those in the world of culture given the trials they will go through”, after the announcement of the appointment of Rachida Dati. Known for her striking formulas, in 2021, she designated the members of Emmanuel Macron’s party to “left-wing traitors” and of “right-wing traitors”.
