Phil Collins and Genesis had not played together in 14 years, and in the meantime, the health problems of their drummer-singer have shattered hopes of taking over the drumsticks. So, as was the case during rehearsals for the current tour “The last domino”, Phil Collins sings now seated, and it is his son who provides the drums. Yes Genesis displays a new profile for his last lap, the music is there. That of a legendary group which, in 50 years of performing, has known several lives. At the end of the 1960s, Procol Harum and Moody Blues were the inventors of a new musical genre: the meeting between electric guitar and different styles of music. We call it progressive rock, and Genesis will be part of this heritage.

“It’s a mix of pop, rock, folk, jazz, explains Dominique Dupuis, editor and author of Prog-Rock in 150 figures (Éditions Le Layeur). The pieces told a story and were in what the we were going to call the concept album.“ Conceptual even on stage, between music and theater, singer Peter Gabriel has chained the eccentricities. And as the latter is an expert in surprises, he announced, in 1975, his desire to leave the group. Fortunately, Genesis has in its ranks a possible replacement who knows the songs well: Phil Collins, backing vocalist and drummer of the group. “I want to wear a cap and a frock coat, but I won’t go further in the disguise”, he had then warned. “When Peter Gabriel left, I took the job of singer more seriously, said the artist in 2015. And then I had no choice. With Genesis, we couldn’t find anyone else. “ With Phil Collins, Genesis becomes more pop, and multiplies the hits, like “Jesus he knows me” and “Invisible touch”.
