The noose is tightening around the group of private nursing homes Orpea. The state announced on Saturday March 25 that it was going to take legal action and claim reimbursement of public grants that would not have been used in favor of residents.

After six weeks of investigation, checks in a dozen Ehpad Orpea and at the company’s headquarters, the government delivers its conclusions on Saturday March 25. It indicates that serious malfunctions have been observed. In a press release of a few lines, the ministry summarizes certain failures: nutritional deficiencies of residents, overcrowded nursing homes, irregularity in the use of public funds and back margins.

In a press release on the investigation carried out by the State services, the mistreatment denounced by several families of residents and employees is never mentioned. The Minister of Autonomy replies that justice will be seized for embezzlement of public money, and only on this point. If the embezzlement is proven, Orpea could therefore be ordered to reimburse the State up to several million euros, according to the government. For a former employee of Orpea, who had helped reveal the affair, the reaction of the State is insufficient. He is also surprised at the lack of transparency of the State, because the Orpea investigation report, which was to be made public, will ultimately remain confidential.
